We all abhor violence.. Violence is a disgraceful part of the community.

My feeling about violence is that it is committed by a very few.. literally that it is 1 in one thousand of the population. There was an article in The wentworth courier recently and it spoke about binge drinking being a problem and it spoke of a 'regular' who gets into fights and is often admitted to St Vincents hospital OFTEN after getting in fights? Why is this person not banned from the area?

Violence is something that should be addressed at a federal level like the state government has done with speeding... the little 'pinky' campaign. If we could overcome this mentality that fighting is an acceptable act in society then many problems encountered in entertainment precincts would be avoided.

In my experience of Kings Cross there is apparently no rangers on patrol after midnight (an OHS issue) and no police on foot patrol after about 2AM.. There is 20 000-30 000 people in the cross every weekend all who struggle to leave the area.

The taxi drivers (the modern day heroes of this city) unfortunately seem to all change shift at the same time and there are no public transport options and no passive police presence.. This also seems to be when most incidents occur.

So here we have the AHA trying to tell us that dealing with alcohol related violence is the responsibility of everyone other than their hotels/clubs?

Hear hear - how about showing photos of some glassing victims, or someone with their head split open after being assaulted - if you're not adult enough to control your own drinking don't go out, and don't support the AHA in this shonky campaign that's motivated solely by self interest and the pursuit of more cash in their coffers.

How about we debate the policies. It seems to me that everyone is attempting to take the moral high ground, and very little of what I've read has added to the debate.

There is always going to be room for improvement. Certain law/policy changes have been suggested and some of these have provoked quite a reaction.

Why not use this forum to debate these, and not just attempt to close it down.

James - right on my friend...we really need an independant, open website to have this discussion on...hopefully someone is building that site right now!

It seems to me that people are just getting encouraged to leave one venue to go to another to get more drinks, therefore more drunk people wandering the streets... someone should do something about the cab situation. I am tired of being charged $50 for a $12 cab ride home. I've never experienced that problem anywhere else in the world!!!

This debate seems quite vacuous and vain. And to carry it out on an industry sponsored site seems to undermine the limited shred of credibility it might have - that is defending our individual freedoms from government and corporate influence. I like my late night beers as much as the next guy, but this smacks of towing the industry line...

Good lord, you people baggin this initiative are missing the point entirely. THis is about people taking responsiblity for their own actions. Frank since when does a hotel or a group representing their rights create drinkers, violence or issues? education and behaviour creates these issues, just go to the AERF who has spent 200 million researching the issues to see how deluded you guys are. Knee jerk policy from happy clappers and wowsers like you will turn our state into a intrnational joke. ever drunk a bottle of champagne out or a plastic jug after 12 midnight? I am thinking not! When you understand how the "top 50" hotels got there (ie not from most violent but from best relationships with police) maybe you can comment with some authority. Until then, This site is the first one to actually engage the social young public in policy that affects their lives. Keep up the good work

We have to start somewhere in dealing with alcohol related crime, violence and offensive behavior. People living near large and badly run pubs have been asking to have something done. Usually government officials and politicians read from the AHA spin sheet and blame the problems on late food outlets or underage drinkers in the parks or the lack of taxis - never the pubs!! The pubs take the same line. With these measures the NSW government is taking some responsibility at last - at some risk to them electorally. Let's give the measures a chance.
