Police ban loitering after 2am

PEOPLE who loiter around licensed premises where a new 2am lockout applies could be arrested.

Police have also threatened to seek strict bail conditions on anyone charged with alcohol related offences, including a possible ban on them drinking alcohol and/or entering licensed
premises.

The 2am lockout and related measures came into force on Monday at 48 licensed premises, including AKA Nightclub Bar at Sutherland, Fusions Nightclub at Cronulla, the Peakhurst Inn and Northies in the Cronulla Hotel.

Sergeant Scott Robinson, licensing supervisor for Sutherland local area command, said if people were refused entry to these premises they should leave the vicinity as they may be committing an offence by staying.

"Police will not tolerate violent crime, drugs or antisocial behaviour in or around our licensed premises,'' he said.

"As a result, police will be seeking to impose strict bail conditions on persons charged with alcohol related offences that may include prohibiting consumption of alcohol and/or entering licensed premises.''
Premier Nathan Rees said the new conditions were ``a bold first step to addressing a drinking culture which in some cases has gotten completely out of control''.

However, Opposition spokesman George Souris said the legislation was flawed and had been rushed through Parliament without proper analysis of the assault statistics leading to the naming of the 48 premises.
Mr Souris claimed the Government had legislated away hoteliers' rights, including the owners of the Peakhurst Inn, who took court action, seeking a stay of the new measures.
